Kehidupan Awal

David Archuleta lahir di Miami, Florida. Ayahnya, Jeff Archuleta adalah seorang pemusik jazz, sedangkan ibunya, Lupe Marie Archuleta ialah seorang penyanyi dan penari yang berasal dari Honduras. Pada usia enam tahun ia dan keluarganya berpindah ke Salt Lake Valley, Sandy, Utah. Sekarang ia dan keluarganya tinggal di Murray, Utah. David Archuleta memiliki empat saudara, Claudia (18), Daniel (14), Jazzy (11) dan Amber (9). David Archuleta masih tercatat sebagai murid Murray High School.

David Archuleta dibesarkan di keluarga yang mencintai musik. Pada usia enam tahun Ia mulai bernyanyi setelah menonton video Les Miserables. Ia tidak dapat berhenti menyanyikan lagu-lagu Les Miserables setelah menonton video tersebut, saat itulah ayahnya, Jeff, mengetahui bahwa anaknya memiliki bakat alami sebagai penyanyi.

Pada usia sepuluh tahun, David menyanyi untuk pertama kalinya dihadapan publik. Ia mengikuti kompetisi menyanyi Utah dan menyanyikan lagu Dolly Parton yang berjudul “ I Will Always Love You “, Ia memperoleh sambutan yang sangat meriah dari penduduk Utah yang menontonnya dan menjuarai kategori anak-anak. David Archuleta pernah mengalami kerusakan pita suara akibat penyakit bronkhitis yang menyerangnya setelah ia mengikuti Star Search. Salah satu pita suaranya lumpuh, yang mengakibatnya ia terdengar seperti kesulitan bernafas apabila bernyanyi ataupun berbicara. David pernah ditawari untuk melakukan operasi, tetapi operasi tesebut terlalu beresiko sehingga David memutuskan tidak akan melakukan operasi. Kini Ia merasa bahwa ia telah sembuh total dari penyakitnya.

Pengaruh Musik

Pada banyak kesempatan wawancara David menyebutkan bahwa ia sangat menyukai musik-musik John Mayer, Natasha Bedingfield, Sara Barailles, dan Jason Mraz. Dalam wawancaranya yang terbaru di acara The View , 24 Juni 2008, Ia menyebutkan bahwa ia sangat mengidolakan Eva Cassidy. Dalam sesi tanya jawab American Idol ia menyebutkan nama Natalie Cole, Stevie Wonder, Kirk Franklin, dan Bryan Adams sebagai pemusik yang mempengaruhi musiknya. Tamyra Gray, Elliot Yamin, Jennifer Hudson, Jordin Sparks, dan Fantasia sebagai alumni American Idol favoritnya.

Saat kecil, David yang ayahnya ialah pemusik Jazz dan ibunya penyanyi latin banyak mendengarkan musik jazz, gospel, pop, rock dan soul. Sedangkan ibunya sering memainkan musik yang membuat ia dan saudara-saudaranya menari. Selain itu, David juga mengutarakan dalam beberapa wawancara bahwa ia menyukai musik Broadway.

Star Search

Dengan bakat luar biasa yang dimilikinya, David Archuleta mengikuti kompetisi menyanyi Star Search dan menjadi juara di kategori anak-anak pada usia dua belas tahun. Di Star Search ia bersaing dengan Alexandrea Lushington, yang tenyata mengikuti American Idol bersama David. Ia memperoleh $100.000 sebagai hadiah menjadi juara di Star Search.

Kemenangannya di Star Search membuat David memperoleh kesempatan tampil di The Jenny Jones Show and CBS The Early Show. Selain tampil diberbagai talk show ia juga berkesempatan bertemu kontestan American Idol musim pertama dan menyanyikan lagu “ And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going “ untuk mereka. Seluruh kontestan American Idol terpesona oleh keberanian dan suara yang dimiliki David.

Sayangnya setelah ia mengikuti Star Search ia mengalami bronkhitis yang mengakibatnya salah satu pita suaranya lumpuh. Selain itu hal itu juga menyebabkan David gagal memperoleh kontrak rekaman. Semenjak usia sebelas tahun hingga sekarang David memiliki pelatih vokal pribadi yang merupakan salah satu pelatih vokal ternama Amerika Serikat yang bernama Dean Kaelin. Dean Kaelin membantu proses penyembuhan pita suara David. Selama sakit, David memutuskan untuk mempelajari piano dan menulis beberapa lagu.

Audisi

Berdasarkan eBook milik Dean Kaelin "An Insider View", sebenarnya Ia tidak yakin bahwa David memutuskan untuk mengikuti audisi American Idol musim ketujuh. Walau akhirnya David memutuskan untuk mengikuti audisi di kota San Diego, California yang diselengarakan pada tanggal 30 Juli dan 31 Juli 2007. David menyanyikan lagu Waiting On The World To Change milik John Mayer.

Walau ia sempat lupa lirik pada pertengahan lagu, akan tetapi ketiga juri sepakat bahwa David layak mendapatkan tiket emas menuju Hollywood. Saat mengahadiri wawancara di Larry King Live, David mengutarakan bahwa ia tidak lolos pada seleksi pertama oleh produser American Idol, tetapi saat ia dan ayahnya bersiap untuk pulang, ia dipanggil kembali dan diijinkan mengikuti tahap berikutnya, yaitu bernyanyi di hadapan Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul dan Simon Cowell.

Hollywood Week

Pada hari pertama Hollywood week, David menyanyikan lagu Crazy milik Gnarls Barkley yang disebut-sebut sebagai audisi tebaik sepanjang sejarah American Idol, sayangnya akibat masalah hak cipta, penampilan David saat menyanyikan lagu tersebut tidak pernah diperlihatkan ke publik. David pun lolos dengan mudah ke audisi terakhir Hollywood week.

Pada hari ketiga Hollywood week atau dikenal sebagai audisi terakhir untuk menentukan kontestan di 24 besar, David menyanyikan lagu hit milik Bryan Adams yang berjudul Heaven. Ia memperoleh pujian dari ketiga juri, bahkan Randy Jackson mengatakan bahwa penampilan David ialah penampilan terbaik sepanjang Hollywood Week. Menilai penampilan memukau David di Hollywood Week, maka tidak heran apabila David dapat dengan mudah memperoleh tiket ke babak 24 besar.

Setelah final American Idol 2008, David Archuleta memperoleh kesempatan untuk tampil di berbagai acara diantaranya, “American Idol Extra”, “Larry King Live”, “MTV TRL”, “The Early Show”, “The View”, “The Today Show”, “Entertainment Weekly”, “Live With Regis and Kelly”, “The Morning Show With Mike and Juliet”, “Extra” dan beberapa acara TV lainnya. Selain itu, David Archuleta menjadi bintang iklan Guitar Hero. Ia dan David Cook meniru salah satu adengan yang dilakukan Tom Cruise dalam film Risky Bussines.
Pada 5 Juni 2008 secara resmi David mengumumkan bahwa dirinya sudah mengikat kontrak dengan Jive Records. Maka di Indonesia, album David Archuleta akan beredar dibawah bendera Sony BMG. Setelah resmi bergabung dengan Jive Records maka album pertama David direncanakan akan dijual kepasaran pada bulan Oktober atau November, sedangkan singelnya akan keluar dan tersedia untuk diunduh pada akhir Agustus.
Tiga lagu David yang ia nyanyikan saat final ”Dont Let The Sun Go Down On Me”, ”In This Moment” dan ”Imagine” temasuk dalam daftar 10 besar lagu yang diunduh melalui iTunes. Ketiga lagu tersebut juga masuk kedalam daftar Billboard Hot 100 berdasarkan data tanggal 7 Juni 2008, ”Imagine” berada di posisi #36, ”Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” berada di posisi #58 dan pada posisi #60 terdapat lagu ”In This Moment”.
Selain itu lagu ”Longer”, ”Think Of Me”, dan ”Angels” masuk dalam daftar Billboard’s Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singels di posisi #15, #19 dan #24. Total lagu David Archuleta yang diunduh berdasarkan data pada Billboard tanggal 7 Juni 2008 ialah 323,000 unduhan. Dua lagu David Archuleta yang berjudul ”Angels In The Alleyway” dan ”The Most Beautiful Part” tersedia untuk dibeli di iTunes.
Walaupun hanya menjadi runner up, David mendapat perhatian yang luar biasa setelah American Idol. Kepopulerannya membuat ia muncul di beberapa artikel di situs-situs terkenal. Pada 21 Juni 2008 David menjadi tamu istimewa yang diundang untuk menghadiri World Premiere film tebaru milik Pixar berjudul Wall-E. Baru-baru ini, David terpilih menjadi Artist Of The Month untuk bulan Juli pada salah satu situs musik, Musiqtone.

Pada tanggal 1 Agustus 2008, singel pertama dari album pertama David yang akan dirilis pada 4 November 2008, diperdengarkan untuk pertama kalinya ke seluruh dunia melalui stasiun radio ternama di Amerika Serikat, Z100. Lagu dengan melodi yang sangat catchy dan bernuansa Pop RnB memang sangat sesuai dengan usia David dan menjadi ciri khas lagu Crush, selain tentunya menunjukan bahwa David can sing the phonebook. Lagu Crush akan tersedia untuk dibeli melalui iTunes Store pada 12 Agustus 2008. Tidak dapat diragukan lagi bahwa Crush akan menjadi #1 hits dan memperoleh platinum.
